Justin Barcia Signs with Factory Honda

1098_justin-barcia
American Honda is proud to welcome Justin Barcia to Team Honda Muscle Milk for the 2013-2014 seasons. Barcia will contest both the AMA Supercross Championship and AMA Motocross Championship aboard a factory-prepared Honda CRF450R race machine.

Barcia has been a part of the Honda family for many years, riding several models as he rose through the amateur ranks. After winning numerous amateur titles, Barcia made his professional motocross debut in 2009 aboard a GEICO Honda CRF250R. The GEICO Honda Race Team program allows top amateurs to take the next step into their careers as professional Lites riders. The team has proven quite successful with Trey Canard, Eli Tomac and Justin Barcia all coming through the ranks to win AMA Lites Championships.

"It has taken a lot of hard work to get our program where it is today," stated Factory Connection President and GEICO Honda Team co-owner Rick Zielfelder. "We pride ourselves on having an elite program that offers support to top amateur racers and gives them the opportunity to further their careers in the professional ranks. The GEICO Honda Team has given riders the tools to reach their ultimate goal of winning professional championships. It also creates a seamless integration for the rider to make the move to racing the 450s with the Honda factory team. And like Trey Canard, we are pleased to see Barcia make the transition to Team Honda Muscle Milk."

In the 2011 AMA Supercross season, Barcia appeared on the podium at every round of the nine-race series and was able to clinch his first Lites East Championship title. During the 2011 outdoor motocross season, Barcia was given the opportunity to ride the last four rounds aboard a factory CRF450R. He showed that he could run up front by taking third place overall at both Unadilla and Pala, and grabbing a moto win in Southwick. Barcia's 2012 season has proven just as successful as he earned five race wins and wrapped up his second Lites East Championship in New Orleans with one round remaining.

"It's an awesome feeling to sign with Team Honda Muscle Milk," said Barcia. "It is something that I have dreamed of since being an amateur. I've been riding and winning on Hondas for years because it's the bike I feel best on. I am excited to continue my career with Honda aboard the CRF450R. I got a glimpse of what I have to look forward to after getting the opportunity to race the 450 last year. After working with Jeff Stanton I have learned that hard work really pays off and I plan to continue that work ethic into my 450 career. With a great team behind me and an amazing bike, I believe I can be a contender for the championship."

Team Manager Erik Kehoe welcomes Barcia to the Honda lineup. "We are pleased to have Justin on board for the 2013 season. With two Lites East championships under his belt, Justin has proven time and again that he has what it takes to run up front and win races," said Kehoe. "He has also shown that he can be a front runner aboard a CRF450R. We believe that with his pure determination to win, Justin will be a consistent threat to climb the podium. His focus and drive make him a great fit for our team."

Honda Develops Successful Traffic Jam Detector

Honda
Honda announced a technology breakthrough today capable of detecting the potential for traffic congestion by actively determining whether the driving pattern of a vehicle is likely to create bottle-necking.

Unlike GPS systems that actively reroute drivers to avoid roads suffering from heavy traffic, Honda’s system passively reacts to congestion situations, monitoring the acceleration and deceleration patterns from the driver to determine whether the car will negatively impact traffic flow. Based on its decision, the system can then guide drivers with the appropriate information for optimal throttle control from devices including on-board color-coded displays.

Working with University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, Honda carried a series of experiments in order to refine its traffic congestion monitoring system. Ultimately, the tests resulted in significant gains in congestion simulation, improving the average speeds of leading vehicles to improve by 23 percent with trailing vehicles also benefiting from an 8 percent improvement in fuel economy.

Honda didn’t end testing there. By applying Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and combining the system with on-board terminals to cloud servers, Honda experimented with a network of communicating vehicles that can synchronize driving patterns in a wider scale. According to Honda, this resulted in a further 16 percent increase in the average speed of trailing vehicles and an additional 5 percent improvement in fuel economy compared to the results recorded when not using ACC and cloud technology.

Rather than focusing on hybrids and alternative energy as the only solution to emissions reduction, Honda found that solutions to driving behavior can curb traffic congestion and minimize its tendency to cause a higher potential of rear-end collisions, delay arrival times, and increase CO2 emissions.

Honda intends to introduce its technology into the market soon but will first conduct real-world testing in Italy and Indonesia during May and July.

American Honda today reported April 2012 U.S. sales of 122,012 units, an increase of 10 percent based on the daily selling rate*. The Honda division posted April 2012 sales of 109,837, an increase of 9.2 percent compared to April 2011. Acura's U.S. April sales of 12,175 were up 18 percent compared to April 2011.

Honda
- Honda Accord sales up more than 40 percent compared to April 2011, demonstrating the strength of Accord, even as an all-new version is set to debut this fall.

- New April sales record for CR-V. Accord, CR-V, Odyssey and Ridgeline all post double-digit percentage sales gains compared to last year.

- Honda Civic Hybrid sales up more than 600 percent on heightened fuel-price sensitivity.

"With double-digit sales growth in April, the Accord continues to be the retail sales leader in the mid-size segment," said John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president of sales. Honda Riders Top the Podium, Regain Lites Points Lead in Seattle

Honda
Race fans filled Century Link Field in Seattle, WA, on Saturday night to see Honda riders take on Round 15 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship series. Team Honda Muscle Milk's Justin Brayton rode a strong race to place fourth overall, while L&Mc Racing's Andrew Short put in an impressive ride aboard his Honda CRF450R to grab his career-first Supercross win. GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac had another solid ride aboard his CRF250R, finishing third overall to regain the Lites West points lead.

The Race

After placing third overall in his heat race, Team Honda Muscle Milk's Justin Brayton was ready to take on the main. On the first lap, Brayton began working his way towards the front of the pack and was able to stay consistent under the pressure of multiple riders to finish fourth. "I'm happy to finish fourth and be able to get some valuable points," said Brayton. "I'm just ready to be in that top position. The bike was running great, so I'm ready to go home, continue my training this week and head into Salt Lake City strong."

In the main event, L&Mc Racing's Andrew Short was quick to find his groove on the challenging Seattle track after grabbing the holeshot aboard his Honda CRF450R. Despite being pressured early in the race, Short was able to maintain his lead. He rode a consistent and solid race all the way to the checkered flag to take his first Supercross class win.

"This feeling is completely unreal to me, and I don't even know what to say," Short stated. "After my heat race, I knew track position off the start was huge, so I really tried to dig deep to grab a good start and maintain it the entire race. I have been close to winning before but was never able to pull it all together. Now to be able to get this win after coming off an injury is huge. I was really nervous the whole race, so being able to see that checkered flag while being in the lead is unreal. I'm so excited for my team, myself and my family."

In the Supercross Lites West competition, GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac had an exciting race, exchanging hard passes with another rider. Tomac was able to battle his way to a third-place finish, despite having a bent shifter. "That was the wildest race of my entire life," said Tomac. "It started a little rough, obviously, with the battle between me and Wilson. We made a few contact passes, but unfortunately there weren't many places to pass on the track. My focus is just to be smart and finish strong the rest of the rounds. I'm here for the championship."

Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda's Cole Seely rode a solid race to finish fourth, followed by GEICO Honda's Wil Hahn.

The Focus: Dunlop

Dunlop has an unequaled win record in virtually every form of AMA racing and as a Honda racing team sponsor for more than two decades, has contributed immensely to the motocross team's record 61 national titles. Working hand in hand with Honda's factory riders and technicians guarantees cutting-edge tire technology for the Honda team, and the partnership pays dividends for weekend warriors through the development of off-road tires for riders of every level.

Honda

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today announced that Leviton Manufacturing Company, the global leader in connectivity solutions, has been selected as Honda's preferred Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment provider for customer and dealer EV charging.

"As leaders in the fields of advanced technology for mobility and energy solutions, Leviton and Honda both have unique missions to create a more sustainable future," said Steven Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office at American Honda. The Honda Plug-In Hybrid Sedan uses an all-new, two-motor hybrid system which continuously moves through three different modes - all-electric, with up to a 15 mile per charge range; gasoline-electric; and direct-drive - to maximize driving and fuel efficiency, especially during city driving.

"Leviton is excited to work with American Honda as they launch their electric vehicle program here in America. At a high level we share a very similar overall mission; to supply products of the highest quality at a reasonable price for complete customer satisfaction," said Michael Mattei, Vice President and General Manager for Leviton's Commercial and Industrial Business Unit. Honda Earns 2012 Kelley Blue Book Brand Image Awards for Best Value Brand and Most Trusted Brand

Honda

Honda has earned the Best Value Brand and Most Trusted Brand categories in the 2012 Kelley Blue Book Brand Image Awards. Based on consumer perception data from the company's Brand WatchTM study, the Kelley Blue Book Brand Image Awards honor the automotive brands that have most successfully captured positive consumer attention.

American Honda's Executive Vice President of Sales John Mendel accepted both awards yesterday at the New York Auto Show from Kelley Blue Book President Jared Rowe. "We are honored to accept two awards that point so directly to Honda's core tenets," Mendel said. "With Honda constantly striving to earn trust by providing the finest overall ownership value, it's inspiring to see those efforts resonating with consumers."

"With standout vehicles, memorable marketing and positive word of mouth, the winners of Kelley Blue Book's 2012 Brand Image Awards have secured enviable positions in the minds of in-market shoppers," said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com.

In commenting about Honda's 2012 Most Trusted Brand award, Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com noted "Without surprising anyone, our inaugural Most Trusted Brand award goes to a name that's practically synonymous with reliability and dependability.  Honda's vehicles enjoy a decades-deep reputation as the smart choice in so many of the categories in which it competes."

The editors of Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com had an equally savvy comment on Honda's 2012 Best Value Brand award. "Many car buyers assume a vehicle's sticker price is the most significant monetary factor when choosing a car. While it's certainly an important consideration, Honda's reputation for superb resale value, exceptional quality and legendary dependability continues to raise the bar in respect to automotive value."

This marks the fifth year Kelley Blue Book has awarded auto manufacturers the Brand Image Awards, and the second consecutive year Honda has been awarded the Best Value Brand.

Morgan State University Takes Home Grand Prize as First-Time Champion of National Academic Competition

[[posterous-content:pid___0]] Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

In a thrilling intellectual showdown, Morgan State University
emerged victorious among 48 teams and claimed its first National Championship title at the 23rd Annual Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (www.hcasc.com). The annual academic tournament brought 250 top students from the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) together in the Los Angeles area for a two-day competition and the opportunity to win as much as $50,000 in grants for their school.

In a culmination of a year-long program, Morgan State took home the title and beat secondplace finisher Oakwood University after answering the following question correctly:

Who was America's only chief executive never elected as
president or vice president?

Correct Answer: Gerald Ford

The Morgan State team included Craig Cornish (Captain) junior, History Major; Micheal Osikomaiya, sophomore, English Major; John-Paul Stephens, freshman, Screen Writing & Animation Major; and James Hayes-Barber, freshman, Electrical Engineering Major.

Each of the 48 teams first battled it out in their own division to quickly and accurately answer questions on world history, science, literature, religion, the arts, social sciences, popular culture and African-American history and culture. The top team from each of the event's eight divisions advanced to the "Elite Eight Playoffs" and went head-to-head in a single elimination round. The
final two teams then competed for the National Champion title in a best 2 out of 3 final series.

While Morgan State secured the top prize of $50,000 in university grants, all 48 schools were awarded grants. Second place finisher Oakwood University won $25,000, while the remaining "Final 4" teams – Florida A&M University and Morehouse College -- earned $15,000. The other "Elite 8" – Alabama State, North Carolina A&T State, Stillman College and Southern
University - New Orleans – were awarded $9,500 in grants. In total, Honda provided over $300,000 in grants to participating schools.

Since 1989, HCASC has brought together the nation's best and brightest academic competitors from America's top HBCUs. Throughout its history, HCASC has been the only annual academic competition between the nation's HBCUs, touching over 75,000 students and awarding more than $6 million dollars in grants.

Quote from Morgan State University Team Captain
"My favorite part of being on this team has been bonding with our teammates and coach. There have been a lot of incendiary moments, but they've made us stronger. I'm looking forward to getting ready for next year."

- Craig Cornish, captain, Morgan State Honda Campus
All-Star Challenge Team

Quote from Morgan State University Team Coach
"This is everybody's first year on the team, and to try to figure out how to meld what they know with what they need to know, takes a journey that builds a relationship of trust. It's been a beautiful relationship with my team."

- Dr. OluwaTosin Adegbola, coach, Morgan State Honda
Campus All-Star Challenge Team

Quote from Honda Executive
"The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge not only offers a friendly and competitive environment for HBCU students to demonstrate their intellect, hard work and dedication, but also provides them an opportunity to build friendships and establish lasting networks. This year we were able bring the competition to American Honda's headquarters where we introduced the students to
Honda's lines of business. Honda considers it a priority to support our nation's future leaders, and we are proud to be a part of this enriching event."

- Marc Burt, senior manager, Office of Inclusion and
Diversity, American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

2012 Honda Fit Wins Cars.com/USA TODAY/MotorWeek $16,000 Subcompact Shootout

Honda

The 2012 Honda Fit has won the Cars.com/USA TODAY/MotorWeek $16,000 Subcompact Shootout. Honda's versatile and fuel-efficient Fit took the top spot in a competition among seven popular subcompact cars that seat at least four, have four doors, get at least 35 mpg on the highway, and can be purchased for less than $16,000. Experts from Cars.com, USA Today and "MotorWeek" tested these subcompacts to measure all of the needs of the average car-buyer including gas mileage, practicality, user features and comfort.

"We are thrilled to have the exceptional package that is the Honda Fit recognized by such a well-respected group of automotive media," said Michael Accavitti, vice president of marketing operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "To have topped such a wide group of competition in such a thorough, real-world evaluation demonstrates that Honda versatility, value and fun are standard even in our most affordable model."

"As gas prices and used-car prices continue to rise, a shootout like this acts as a guide for consumers looking to purchase a new subcompact as an alternative to a used vehicle," said Patrick Olsen, editor-in-chief of Cars.com. "In addition to confident handling, a solid transmission, great visibility and unmatched practicality, the Honda Fit is just fun to drive and emerged as our clear winner."

Beyond this latest Cars.com/USA TODAY/MotorWeek shootout win, the 2012 Honda Fit is also an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK and received the 2012 Residual Value Award from ALG. The Fit topped the J.D. Power and Associates' Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) for 2011 in its segment, and is a six-time winner of Car and Driver magazine's "10Best Cars" award, having garnered this accolade every year it has been on sale in the U.S.

2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas Keys Netted by NHL Star George Parros

Honda
Honda presented the keys to a 2012 Civic Natural Gas to Anaheim Ducks NHL star George Parros at the American Honda campus yesterday in Torrance, Calif. Under an agreement with American Honda, Parros will drive the Civic Natural Gas to create awareness of the vehicle amongst his Ducks teammates and fans.

Awarded the 2012 Green Car of the Year®, the  Civic Natural Gas is the only OEM-built, CNG-powered passenger car for sale in the U.S. Now available at 197 dealers in 36 states, the 2012 Civic Natural Gas is powered by the cleanest internal-combustion engine certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Tier-II, Bin-2 and ILEV certification as of August 2010). The Civic Natural Gas currently qualifies for a state-issued decal allowing single-occupant access to High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) "carpool" lanes in California and several other states.

"George is an ideal representative for the Honda Civic Natural Gas vehicle and embodies many of Honda's core attributes; he has a strong sense for environmental issues, is value driven, and is active in his community," explained Steve Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office at American Honda. "To help George with his daily commute to the Honda Center, he will be replacing his previous generation natural gas powered Honda Civic with the all-new 2012 model, featuring enhanced exterior and interior styling, improved fuel economy and a refueling price typically 30 percent less than gasoline."

Parros, 32, is in his sixth season with the Anaheim Ducks (seventh in the NHL), having played on the Stanley Cup-winning 2007 team. The popular right wing (#16) and Princeton grad joined the NHL in 2005, and is well recognized by hockey fans thanks to his 6-foot 5-inch, 228-pound frame and unique mustache.

This is the second natural gas powered Civic Parros has received from Honda, having begun his first stint in October 2010. Parros is also the second Anaheim Duck player to drive one of Honda's alternative fuel vehicles. The first was former Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer, who became an FCX Clarity fuel-cell electric vehicle customer in January 2010.

The 2012 Honda CR-V, 2012 Honda Odyssey and 2012 Honda Civic have all made Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com 10 Best Family Cars of 2012 list. Honda Comes Out Strong in Atlanta

Honda
A sold-out crowd of nearly 70,000 attended round eight of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship series this weekend in Atlanta, GA. Honda riders had an impressive showing with Team Honda Muscle Milk's Justin Brayton finishing fifth and replacement rider Cole Seely finishing in sixth place in the Supercross class. It was also the second round of the East Lites class and GEICO Honda's Justin Barcia made it two wins in a row, while his teammate Justin Bogle finished third.

It was a frustrating start to the day for Team Honda Muscle Milk's Brayton, who is still recovering from his crash in San Diego. Brayton qualified eighth in practice but grabbed a sixth-place finish in his heat race. In the main, Brayton got a mid-pack start and battled the entire 20 laps, finishing a respectable fifth place.

Seely had a noteworthy ride aboard his Team Honda Muscle Milk CRF450R. After making a minor bike adjustment during practice, Seely was ready for the night. In the main he impressed everyone by grabbing the holeshot and leading the pack for the first seven laps. After falling back a few positions, he was still able to finish a solid sixth place.

"I felt confident with my performance going from the heat race into the main," said Seely. "In the main I got the holeshot and expected to see someone's front wheel within the first few laps but it didn't happen and I was able to lead for a while. I tried to hold a decent pace for as long as I could but I got a little tired and some of the other guys got by me. This race was good for me to see where I am in the Supercross class and it gives me more confidence going into next weekend."

GEICO Honda's Kevin Windham hit a milestone in his career with Atlanta marking his 200th Supercross start. Windham showed impressive speed with a fifth-place-overall qualifying time in practice, and a fourth-place finish in his heat. Unfortunately, a bad start in the main left Windham towards the back of the pack. He rode a noteworthy race, making his way up to eighth place.

"I knew as soon I came off the line that it was going to be a long night," said Windham. "Although it left a lot to be desired out there I am really focused on my accomplishment of being able to stick around this long. With such a competitive Supercross class it is hard to go out there and get a podium when you are up against a bad start. I am happy and grateful for everyone who has helped get me to this 200th start."

Current points leader and defending Lites East Champion Justin Barcia made his way to the podium as a winner for a second consecutive week. After posting the second-quickest qualifying time of the night, Barcia finished second in his heat race. In the main he dominated the field, grabbing the holeshot and never looking back.

"The night went really good for me," said Barcia. "I had good practices and a decent heat race, but I knew I could be up front in the main. The GEICO Honda CRF250R was running great and I felt awesome. I got the holeshot in the main and ran my own race. With two wins under my belt, I am ready to head into next weekend and make it a third."

GEICO Honda's newest rider Justin Bogle made his podium debut, finishing in third place in the Lites main. "The track was really good, a lot more technical than Arlington, which I think suits my riding style better," said Bogle. "I got a sixth-place start and was able to make some passes and capitalize on some mistakes. It was a great night and I'm excited for the rest of the season."

Honda Tops the Opening Round of the Lites East Class

Honda

Round seven of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship series took place this weekend in Arlington, TX. Nearly 54,000 fans filled Cowboys Stadium to watch not only the seventh round of the series, but also the opening round of the Lites East class. GEICO Honda's Justin Barcia, who is also the defending Lites East Champion, started his season strong by winning the main. His teammate Kevin Windham and Team Honda Muscle Milk's Justin Brayton rode noteworthy races, finishing in the top ten.

After spending most of the week recovering from his crash in San Diego, Team Honda Muscle Milk's Justin Brayton put together a respectable ride aboard his CRF450R. He finished a solid fifth in his heat race. In the main, Brayton grabbed a mid-pack start and had a close call on the first lap when another rider landed on his right side. Despite damage to his exhaust, Brayton spent the remaining 20 laps battling his way up a ninth-place finish.

"The night went okay since I came into this round not even knowing if I was going to be able to ride. I did a lot of therapy this week but wasn't able to get on the bike," said Brayton. "In the main I got landed on in the first lap. The right side of my body and my muffler were pretty messed up. I am happy to be going home safe and have another week for rehab. I think I'll be able to go to Atlanta more on point like I was before my crash in San Diego."

TwoTwo Motorsports' Chad Reed started the day off strong after laying down the fastest lap time in qualifying, giving him first gate pick headed into the heat races. He finished a solid second in his heat race in front of GEICO Honda's Kevin Windham. In the main Reed got a good start and quickly made his way into the second-place position. He was putting a lot of pressure on the rider in first place until going down hard in the whoops. Reed was taken off the track by the Asterisk medical team and was unable to finish the race.

For a second week in a row GEICO Honda's Kevin Windham had an upsetting end to his night. After qualifying fifth quickest during the day, he finished third in his heat. During the main he rode in fifth the majority of the race until making a few mistakes and dropping to seventh place.

"The GEICO Honda was running incredible and things were going great almost all day," said Windham. "I don't know what happened but with three to four laps to go I made some major mistakes causing me to get passed a few times. I don't want to dwell on it too much since the majority of the day went well but I just need to focus on finishing the last five laps strong. I'm excited for Atlanta which will be my 200th start and am hoping to turn things around and make it on the podium."

Defending Lites East Champion Justin Barcia started his 2012 season exactly where he left off last year-on top of the podium. After setting the quickest lap time in qualifying, Barcia rode a solid heat race finishing in first place. In the main he nabbed a fourth place start and quickly began charging to the front of the pack. On lap eight Barcia made the pass for first and quickly pulled away from the rest of the field to take his first win of the season.

"The night started okay. I got a bad start in the heat race but was still able to take the win," said Barcia. "I turned it around in the main, got a pretty good start and made some strong passes. I ended up getting the lead and was able to pull a nice gap. This is a great way to start off the season and I am excited to head to Atlanta."

Honda Odyssey Receives MotorWeek 2012 Drivers' Choice Award

Honda

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today that the 2012 Honda Odyssey has received the 2012 MotorWeek Drivers' Choice Award for Best Minivan. This is the sixth time the Odyssey has garnered the Drivers' Choice Award from MotorWeek, with Honda's benchmark minivan having won the award in back-to-back years in 1999/2000, 2005/2006 and now 2011/2012.

Designed and built1 in the United States, the eight-passenger Odyssey features the highest EPA2 highway fuel economy rating for an eight-passenger minivan of 28 mpg for Odyssey Touring. It has also earned the best possible safety ratings from both NHTSA (5-Star Overall Vehicle Score) and the IIHS (TOP SAFETY PICK), an achievement that no other currently-tested minivan can match.

"Beyond great packaging, class-leading fuel economy, unparalleled safety ratings and cutting-edge family-friendly features, the Odyssey was designed to be fun to drive." said Michael Accavitti, VP of marketing operations for American Honda. "Being honored with a Motorweek Driver's Choice Award for a second consecutive year confirms that the Odyssey remains the best minivan choice for those who truly enjoy driving."

Presented annually since 1983, the MotorWeek Drivers' Choice Award has been awarded 29 times to Honda vehicles. The winner of two Emmy awards, MotorWeek is television's longest running and most respected automotive series. Produced by Maryland Public Television, MotorWeek airs on 89 percent of PBS stations nationwide, and can also be seen on Discovery's Velocity and the V-me Spanish-language network.
